Sister Alfonso grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin, where she attended parochial elementary and high school.
She earned a bachelor of arts degree in Education from Edgewood College and a Master’s degree in Education from DePaul University in Chicago. She has also taken many other courses through the years to keep updated on trends in education.
Sister Alfonso has been a Dominican of Sinsinawa Sister for 66 years. She has served the church in Minneapolis, Chicago, Sioux City ( Iowa), Baraboo, Columbus, Portage and Madison. She also spent 19 years in Oklahoma, 12 years as principal in Tulsa and seven years as a principal and teacher in Kingfisher. She has taught every grade except kindergarten and first.
She retired from leading classrooms in 1991. Since then, she has been an aide in various schools, including Columbus, Portage and now at St. Dennis. She is in her thirteenth year at St. Dennis School, where she works in the school office and teaches cursive writing to the third grade class.
“I enjoy the children,” says Sister Alfonso. “We have a great, friendly staff and faculty. We really enjoy being together.”
Sister Alfonso enjoys reading in her spare time and spending time with her family, including vacationing with her youngest sister.
