FIRST GRADE
608-246-5121
Sister Eileen grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago. After graduating from high school, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. It was then her adult life in the field of education began to take shape.
She earned her first degree, a BA in Elementary Education, from Edgewood College in Madison. Following graduation, her first teaching assignment was at Corpus Christi School in New York City. After “seven happy years” she moved to St. Mary's in Portage, Wisconsin. While there, she completed a Master's degree in the Teaching of Reading at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, doing her studying during the summer months. Subsequent teaching positions included Visitation School in Kewanee, Illinois and a parochial school in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.
From Lock Haven, Sister Eileen came to St. Dennis School. Since then she has been honored with the Kohl Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Sister Eileen says that first grade continues to be her great love and her favorite grade. “Every year I see the miracle of reading happen as children learn to unlock words using a variety of learning strategies and skills,” she says. “This gift of reading is the key to learning and lasts a lifetime!”
She explains that at St. Dennis School, the focus is on the development of the whole child: physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. “The child learns in an atmosphere where the gospel values of respect and compassion, peace and justice, generosity and love of neighbor are modeled by all – principal and teachers, clergy, school employees, parents and the children themselves,” says Sister Eileen.
She notes that St. Dennis School parents “give 200% of their time and energy” to enrich all levels of this educational philosophy. “ St. Dennis School is a remarkable environment for a young child to grow into a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ,” she says.
Sister Eileen lives at the St. Dennis Parish convent with other Dominican Sisters. She is grateful for their daily support and friendship.
She concludes, "I give gratitude to God and the people of St. Dennis for our school and the opportunity to minister here.”
